When Sarah* moved to the Fraser Coast, she was looking to make new connections and learn more about her new community.

Caring full-time for her elderly parent meant her time was limited, but she still wanted to find a way to contribute and meet like-minded people.

After being referred to the Connecting Communities Social Prescription program by her health provider, Sarah was supported by a Link Worker to identify her personal goals and explore local opportunities.

Together, they found a volunteer role with a community organisation that aligned with her interests and schedule.

Now, Sarah volunteers weekly and says she’s found both joy and purpose in her new role.

Connecting Communities helps individuals who may be experiencing social isolation or life transitions to find connection, purpose, and community involvement.

Through one-on-one support, Link Workers help people set goals, access local resources, and participate in activities that enhance their wellbeing, Maureen Hall, HBNC’s Aged & Inclusion Manager, said.

“This story is a wonderful example of how even small steps toward connection can have a big impact,” Maureen said.

“Volunteering often opens doors to new friendships and a stronger sense of belonging.”
