About us Resources and reports SQW Hospitality Program Helps Young People Build Skills and Confidence When Alex*, a 15-year-old student, enrolled in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Hospitality program, they were facing a range of complex challenges, including anxiety, trauma, autism, depression, and ADHD. These factors had affected Alex’s confidence, communication, and overall employability. At the start of the program, Alex was nervous and hesitant to engage with peers, and their older sister worried they might struggle to complete the course. With the support of a dedicated support worker to assist with paperwork and guidance throughout the program, Alex gradually gained confidence, developed new skills, and built independence. Over the duration of the SQW Hospitality program, Alex experienced significant personal growth and embraced their cultural identity. They reported enjoying the program immensely and are now employed in the hospitality industry, taking the first steps toward a meaningful career. The SQW Hospitality program, coordinated by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre in partnership with Axiom, provides jobseekers facing barriers with practical skills, mentorship, and support to help them succeed in education, training, and employment. By combining skill development with individualised support, the program empowers participants to reach their potential, Farzina William, Enterprise & Multicultural Manager said. “Alex’s journey demonstrates how tailored support and skill-based learning can unlock confidence and career opportunities for young people,” Farzina said. “Programs like SQW are about nurturing potential and celebrating achievement.” *Name changed for privacy.
