About us Resources and reports From Crisis to Stability: Empowering Families Through CAMS When Maya*, a single mother with a seven-year-old child, faced homelessness due to domestic violence, she was navigating multiple challenges. On a temporary visa with limited income support and little knowledge of available services, Maya’s situation was complex and urgent. Through the Community Action for a Multicultural Society (CAMS) program, Maya received comprehensive support to regain stability. CAMS connected her with domestic violence services, Services Australia, and a registered migration agent who provided pro bono assistance to notify the Department of Home Affairs of her changed circumstances. As a result, Maya was granted permanent residency, received financial support under domestic violence provisions, and secured a safe rental property for her and her child. CAMS, coordinated by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, provides practical, culturally responsive support to multicultural community members facing complex challenges, including domestic violence, migration issues, and housing instability. By connecting clients with the right services and advocating on their behalf, CAMS helps families achieve safety, stability, and long-term wellbeing, Farzina William, Enterprise and Multicultural Manager, said. “This story demonstrates the power of targeted support and advocacy,” Farzina said. “With the right assistance, families can move from crisis toward a safe, secure, and hopeful future.” *Name changed for privacy.
