About us Resources and reports The Wandering Teapot: Building Confidence and Career Pathways in Hospitality When Ethan*, a 24-year-old Certificate II in Hospitality student from Maryborough, sought to re-enter the workforce, he faced challenges related to a gap in recent employment and a diagnosis of ASD. Despite previous hospitality experience, his confidence was low, and he needed guidance and support to pursue new opportunities. Through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Hospitality Program and hands-on experience at The Wandering Teapot social enterprise café and catering business, Ethan developed practical skills, gained confidence, and strengthened his employability. With ongoing mentoring and support during his shift placements, he successfully completed his Certificate II in Hospitality and now has a positive outlook on pursuing a career in the industry. The Wandering Teapot and SQW programs, coordinated by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, provide tailored support for young people and adults seeking to develop skills, gain practical experience, and build confidence in hospitality. By combining training with real-world experience, participants are empowered to pursue meaningful employment pathways, Farzina William, Enterprise & Multicultural Manager said. “Ethan’s journey shows how practical experience and support can transform confidence and create new opportunities,” Farzina said. “Programs like this help people achieve their career goals and develop resilience in the workplace.” *Name changed for privacy.
