Rebuilding Lives: Youth Supported to Overcome Homelessness and Achieve Independence

When Chris*, 17, first came to Reconnect, he faced significant challenges.

Following a workplace assault and a history of drug-induced psychosis, he had not attended school for over a year and had recently been discharged from a mental health program.

Chris was also living with his father, who experiences complex mental health challenges and an acquired brain injury, further limiting the support available at home.

Through the Reconnect program, Chris received coordinated support to rebuild his life.

Reconnect supports young people aged 12–18 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The program helps young people and their families strengthen communication, rebuild relationships, and resolve conflict. When returning home is not possible, Reconnect assists young people to live safely and stay connected to education, employment, and their community.

Staff assisted him to access financial independence through Centrelink, reengage in education via a TAFE Certificate II course, and connect with mental health services.

With ongoing support, Chris has achieved remarkable progress.

He successfully completed his Certificate II with full attendance, secured employment in rural Queensland, and is now living independently.

His wellbeing has improved, and his relationship with his parents has strengthened, providing greater emotional stability and connection.

The Reconnect program, coordinated by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, provides intensive case management and practical support for young people at risk of homelessness.

By addressing education, employment, and mental health needs, Reconnect empowers young people to regain independence, confidence, and connection with their communities, Sheenah Heinonen, HBNC’s Families, Children & Youth Services Manager said.

“Chris’s journey highlights the transformative impact of personalised, holistic support,” Sheenah said.

“With the right guidance and opportunities, young people can overcome significant barriers and thrive.”
