When Lani*, a woman from Papua New Guinea, left a violent relationship, she faced an uncertain future.

Far from home and without strong local connections, she was navigating language barriers, trauma, financial stress, unemployment, and social isolation.

Referred to the Bay Families program by a local women’s shelter, Lani received compassionate, holistic support to help her rebuild her life.

Bay Families is a free program that supports parents and caregivers who are facing challenges in their lives. The team provides early, practical help to strengthen family stability, build confidence, and connect people with the right services before problems escalate.

The Bay Families team assisted her in securing crisis accommodation and connecting with a range of vital services, including family therapy, financial counselling, migrant English classes, GP appointments, and employment mentoring.

With ongoing support, Lani’s confidence and independence have grown.

She has since found permanent housing, gained employment, obtained her driver’s licence, joined a local gym, and formed new social connections in her community.

The Bay Families program, coordinated by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, provides early intervention and holistic support to families facing complex challenges.

By connecting clients with the right services and empowering them to set and achieve their own goals, Bay Families helps people move from crisis toward stability and wellbeing, Sheenah Heinonen, HBNC’s Families, Children & Youth Manager said.

“This story reflects the incredible resilience of our clients and the power of coordinated support,” Sheenah said.

“With the right help, people can rebuild their lives and thrive again.”
