About us News TENANCY TRUE OR FALSE: Know your rental rights and responsibilities in 2025 It’s not always easy to find information about Queensland renters’ rights and responsibilities. This International Tenants’ Day, HBNC's QSTARS Tenancy Advice Service want to support the 10,000 renters on the Fraser Coast to know what to expect, what to address and what to escalate. So, here are a few “true or false” questions about renting in Queensland. Tenants have the right to request a pet, and owners must provide reasonable grounds if refusing TRUE! Since October 2022, owners can only refuse for specific reasons and must respond within set timeframes. But remember – this isn’t an “ask forgiveness, not permission” situation! Make sure you have followed the correct channels to request a pet, and received approval, before bringing a furry friend home. Tenants can make minor modifications such as hanging pictures or installing child locks without asking FALSE! While putting a hook on the wall or hanging some blackout curtains might not seem like a big deal, you must request and receive approval first. Owners can’t unreasonably refuse reasonable modifications, so it is possible to make your rental feel more like your home. Landlords can increase rent whenever they want FALSE! As of June 6, 2024, rent can only be increased once every 12 months. This limit applies to the property, not the tenancy. International Tenants’ Day is about celebrating renters and raising awareness of tenant rights worldwide. TRUE! Renting should be a mutually-beneficially arrangement for tenants and property owners.
