At the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC), we believe that everyone matters and that a strong community is built when every generation feels they have a place to belong. That is why we are so thrilled to officially shine a light on one of our most exciting additions to The Neighbourhood Hive: our indoor Boulder Wall.

Since its quiet debut late last year, the Boulder Wall has naturally grown into a centrepiece of the Hive. It represents our commitment to creating a vibrant 'home away from home' where the atmosphere is defined by energy and play. For us, it’s about more than just providing a service; it’s about offering a dynamic space where younger community members can simply show up, hang out, and find their own rhythm in a place that truly belongs to them.

More Than Just a Wall

In the 2025 Fraser Coast Youth Survey, young community members identified a desire for more activities and youth-safe spaces within the community. The decision to bring bouldering to the Neighbourhood Hive on Boat Harbour Drive was driven by a desire to change the narrative around community spaces. By offering modern, engaging activities like bouldering, we are actively working to bridge this gap and invite local youth into a supportive environment where they can build confidence and social connections.

This project was made possible through the incredible generosity of a donor, perfectly embodying our belief that "many hands can play a part in the solution". Their gift has provided a healthy, low-barrier entry point for physical activity that is accessible to families during opening hours – 9am -12pm.

A Safe Space to Challenge Yourself

Safety and inclusivity are at the heart of everything we do. The Boulder Wall is designed for climbers aged 4 and up, ensuring that even our littlest community members can start developing their coordination and problem-solving skills. To keep the vibes positive and the environment safe, we ensure a "no-go" safety zone is maintained, with a maximum of two climbers at any one time. It’s about creating a space where youth can push their limits without judgment, supported by the watchful eyes of parents or guardians.

Part of the Hive

The Boulder Wall isn’t just a standalone feature; it’s part of the wider "Hive" experience. While the kids are conquering the wall or enjoying the indoor playground, families can catch up and unwind in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Whether you’re here for a workshop, visiting the tool library, or just grabbing a coffee, the Boulder Wall adds a layer of energy and movement to our Neighbourhood Hive.

Looking for a unique way to celebrate a milestone? The Boulder Wall and indoor playground are now available for event bookings. We’ve already seen a wonderful response from local families hosting birthday parties here, finding it the perfect blend of active play and community connection.

At HBNC, our vision is a strong and connected community. By providing these spaces for our youth to climb, play, and just "be," we are laying the groundwork for a future where every young person in Hervey Bay feels seen, safe, and connected.
