About us News Calling all young creatives: Share your voice through public art The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) is inviting local young people to bring their stories to life through a new creative initiative that will turn a graffiti-covered wall into a powerful community canvas. The Where I Belong Art Story Wall will feature meaningful artworks created by young Fraser Coast locals. The installation is part of HBNC’s broader commitment to community connection and creative expression giving young people a meaningful opportunity to share their voices, reflect on what it means to belong in our community, and shape the public space around them. Each finished artwork will include a scannable code linking to a short story or video by the young artist, offering insight into the meaning behind their piece and adding an interactive storytelling element to the exhibit. The project will be guided by local artist LeeLee Creative, who will run a series of free youth workshops in August. These sessions will help participants explore their own stories of identity and connection to place, and translate them into visual art that will be mounted along the Bideford Street bike path. LeeLee, an experienced local art facilitator, is passionate about creating zero-pressure spaces for young people to express their voices and ideas. Tanya Stevenson, HBNC CEO, said the project would help local young people feel seen, heard and valued. “We want to create spaces that allow them to share their perspectives and start conversations that create change,” Ms Stevenson said. The project will be delivered in partnership with Youth Justice, with support from the Fraser Coast Regional Council and Queensland Government. Chantel Goodwin, Acting Manager of Hervey Bay’s Youth Justice Service Centre, said the project would give young people a voice. “Connectedness is feeling a sense of belonging, but the journey to understand how we belong can be difficult for some,” Ms Goodwin said. “We value the voices of young people in Hervey Bay and we are excited to give young people a creative means of expressing their connection to our community” State Member for Hervey Bay, David Lee, said creative art held significant benefits for individuals and the community. “The Where I Belong project is a fantastic initiative to engage young people with the creative arts, which has proven social and mental health benefits,” Mr Lee said. “This project allows our young people to connect with the community through creative expression. “Involving young people in the design and creation of this public mural provides a sense of pride, ownership and belonging.” Where I Belong Art Story Wall is set to open in October 2025.
