About us News Skilling Queenslanders for Work Graduates Celebrate New Beginnings Skilling Queenslanders for Work Graduates Celebrate New Beginnings Last week, The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) proudly celebrated the graduation of eight local residents who completed the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Hospitality Training Program. This milestone marks an important step in their journey towards securing meaningful employment and building sustainable careers in the hospitality industry. Funded by the Queensland Government, the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is designed to support individuals facing barriers to employment by helping them develop the skills, qualifications, and confidence they need to enter and stay in the workforce. The hospitality training program offered participants a blend of theoretical learning and hands-on experience, preparing them for real-world job roles. Throughout the 12-week program, participants worked with expert trainers to learn a range of essential skills. They gained valuable experience in the bustling environment of The Wandering Teapot, where they honed their service skills, worked front-of-house, and mastered Point of Sale (POS) systems. These practical experiences, combined with individualised support, helped remove the barriers many of the graduates face when entering the job market. Under the guidance of SQW Project Officer Lesa Stagg, each participant made remarkable progress. "I am so proud of what this group has achieved," said Lesa. "They have not only learned the technical skills needed for the hospitality industry but have also gained the confidence to take that next step toward meaningful employment." This program is part of an ongoing partnership between Axiom College and The Wandering Teapot, with strong backing from the Queensland Government. With an annual investment of $80 million, the SQW initiative continues to provide essential opportunities for disadvantaged Queenslanders to gain skills and qualifications, ultimately helping them secure long-term employment. The students who graduated last week received a Certificate II in Hospitality, an important qualification that will help them stand out in the competitive job market. They now join the ranks of skilled professionals ready to contribute to the workforce.
