About us News Families Encouraged to Join Free Playgroups as Demand for Support Grows HBNC is encouraging families across the Fraser Coast to join its Play With Your Kids (PWYK) playgroups, following a rise in parents seeking safe, supportive environments to help their children learn, play, and connect. PWYK provides free, activity-based playgroups for children aged 0–8 years, supporting physical, emotional, and social development while helping parents build confidence and meaningful social networks. HBNC’s Families, Children & Youth Manager, Sheenah Heinonen, said now is the ideal time for families to get involved. With a new year under way and many families looking for structured, family-friendly outings, PWYK offers a safe, developmental and social opportunity for young children. “So many parents are looking for a place where they feel understood and where their children can grow at their own pace,” Ms Heinonen said. “Our playgroups are open, welcoming, and completely free. They provide so much more than playtime. “Parents tell us they value the connection, the reassurance, and the practical strategies our team can offer.” A Case Study in Connection and Recovery When Anna*, a single mother, first attended PWYK with her four-year-old son, she was navigating the complex impacts of domestic violence. Her son was experiencing trauma-related behaviours, including severe separation anxiety, speech regression, emotional dysregulation, and challenges with social skills. Over six months, PWYK staff developed a trusting relationship with Anna and linked her with specialist support services. Her son received regular developmental assistance from partner organisations through Harmony Hub, while she was referred to counselling. With ongoing care in place, both mother and child are now thriving. They continue to attend PWYK sessions weekly, building resilience, confidence, and stronger connections with others. A Welcoming Space for All Families PWYK sessions include sensory play, creative activities, outdoor exploration, music and movement, and early learning opportunities tailored to children’s developmental needs. Staff provide support, guidance, and referrals when needed, ensuring families can access appropriate services early. “Whether a family is experiencing challenges or simply wants to enjoy time together, everyone is welcome,” Ms Heinonen said. Get Involved Play With Your Kids runs weekly across several Fraser Coast locations. Families can attend casually or regularly — no bookings or referrals required.
