Last Thursday, 4 December, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre came alive with festive spirit as we held our annual Volunteer Christmas Party — a heartfelt celebration honouring the incredible people who give their time, skills and compassion to support our community. The event served as a moment to pause, look back on the year and recognise the volunteer force that makes our work not only possible, but deeply impactful.

Volunteers were welcomed to a Christmas-themed lunch prepared and served by HBNC staff, a simple yet meaningful gesture designed to flip the roles for an afternoon and show just how grateful we are for their continued support. The room was warm with conversation and laughter, helped along by live music that set a relaxed, cheerful atmosphere. A photo area offered plenty of opportunities for fun snapshots, while lucky door prizes kept the excitement going throughout the event.

One of the most touching parts of the afternoon was the acknowledgement of long-serving volunteers. These individuals have given years of steady commitment, helping HBNC grow, adapt and continue delivering essential community services. Their consistency reminded us that volunteering is not merely an activity — it is a relationship, built on trust, care and a shared belief in community connection. This year, we proudly acknowledged volunteers who reached significant milestones, including 5, 10 and 15 years of service.

The celebration took place just one day before International Volunteer Day, Friday, 5 December. The theme for 2025, “Every Contribution Counts,” resonated strongly with the spirit of our event and the culture at HBNC. Although the global day has now passed, its message remains deeply relevant. Every volunteer, every hour and every act of kindness contributes to the collective wellbeing of our community — and our organisation feels that truth every day.

Our latest Social Impact Report further highlighted the scale of volunteer involvement across HBNC. Over the past year, we were supported by 540 volunteers, representing a 25% increase from the previous year. Together, they contributed nearly 20,000 hours of service — support valued at $898,830. These contributions strengthened almost every corner of HBNC, from community programs and social enterprises to events, reception support and frontline assistance.

While the numbers are impressive, the real impact was felt in the personal interactions — the comforting conversations, the extra help offered during busy times, the warm greetings at our reception desk, and the sense of belonging created for those who walk through our doors. Volunteers helped transform HBNC from a service provider into a vibrant, welcoming community hub.

The Volunteer Christmas Party was a perfect opportunity to celebrate that impact. As volunteers mingled, shared stories and enjoyed the festivities, it became clear that the event was not just a thank-you — it was a reflection of the community spirit they help foster all year round.

Looking back on the week, from our Christmas celebration to recognising International Volunteer Day, one message stood out strongly: every contribution truly does count. HBNC’s work is built on the generosity, empathy and commitment of volunteers who choose to help others and strengthen our community.

To every volunteer who supported us this year — thank you. Your time, your care and your belief in community connection make a lasting difference. We are honoured to have celebrated you.
