Services Secondary Collaborative Mural 4, Hervey Bay Special School: I Am When we feel like we belong in a place like school, we feel safe, supported, accepted, and valued—not just for what we do, but for who we are. We can be ourselves, make friends, and try new things. When we belong, we feel happy because people care about us. It brings comfort, confidence, and joy. We know we are part of the group; we matter and that we are welcome. That sense of belonging helps us grow, not just as learners, but as people. It helps us develop confidence to be myself, to celebrate who 'I am'.Students used a variety of ways to communicate what colour they would like to use and what shape they would like to print with. Words were then painted onto the background to communicate messages about 'I am...' The words painted onto the mural were chosen by students in response to the question "how do you feel when you are at school?" Additional words describing the students were added by their teachers. At our school, teachers recognise and celebrate students for who they are. This genuine recognition nurtures a sense of belonging and highlights the unique value each student brings to our school community. This ‘I Am’ artwork explores both individual identity and belonging — it invites you to reflect on who you are as a person and where you feel you belong.” More Art Story Wall stories
